Faculty Survey 2020

Plough Library performed a faculty survey in October 2020 to gauge library use before and after the onset of COVID-19.

Use of Library Services and Resources

  • The majority of the respondents have never used library services or resources
  • The others use library services 1-2 times a year or 1-2 times a semester
  • Library resources are used more frequently, 1-2 times a semester or 1-2 times a month, by most respondents

Results Compared to 2018 Faculty Survey

Most categories showed little or no change from the Faculty Survey of 2018. Among faculty who use the resources, there is an uptick in use in of:

  • Linking to resources
  • Using the Library website
  • Using a database

  • from the School of Arts
  • Full Professors
  • had been at CBU 1-5 years.

  • The Library’s Website & Subject Guides received the highest overall ratings (41)
    • Totaling all Averages, Above Averages, and Excellents

Importance of Students' Having Resources and Services (Fall 2020 Library Survey)

The majority of respondents rated the importance of having resources for students at Somewhat Important and above.

  • Having subject-specific resources had the highest overall ratings (51)
  • Closely behind, were having the ability to request in-person help from a librarian as well as having the ability to do so remotely (47 each)
    • Totaling all Somewhat Importants, Importants, and Essentials

The majority of the respondents address various information literacy issues with every assignment (90).

The most commonly-addressed issues were using scholarly resources (27) and citing sources correctly (25)

  • More access to ebooks and online journal articles
  • Citation help
  • How-to videos

Specifically, respondents mention:

  • Databases: ATLA (religion), Communication & Mass Media Complete (writing)
  • Site licenses: Commercial Appeal (local news), Washington Post (national news)

Addendum: Student Use of Subject Guides - Spring Comparison

Since the Subject Guides were among the most highly NEVER used resources among faculty (41), the Subject Guides’ usage numbers can be assumed primarily to reflect student use.

  • Spring usage: Jan thru May 2019 and 2020
  • Fall usage: Aug thru Oct 2019 and 2020
  • All increased
  • March, April, and August doubled
  • May tripled

As the Subject Guides serve as gateways to Library resources, it is important that the students use them.
