While many databases have direct exports to RefWorks built in, PubMed does not. Because of that, you need special instructions for extracting a reference list from PubMed into RefWorks.
Here's how:
PubMed
- Conduct your search; select items for list.
- Once you've made your selections, click the SAVE button at the top of the results list.
- A Save Citations to File box will open.
- Under Format, choose PubMed, and then click Create File.
- PubMed citation files are tagged, saved as .txt files.
Your Computer
- The file will download and you'll see it in the lower lefthand corner).
- Right click on the download and select Show in Folder.
- Copy the file to your desktop.
RefWorks
- Click the +Add icon.
- Choose Import References from the dropdown, then "select a file from your computer."
- Find the file on your desktop and click open, or drag-n-drop the file.
- RefWorks will recognize the file as an NLM PubMed file.
- Import Options will appear.
- At this point you can direct the imports to a specific folder, or simply click Import. You can always assign folders later.
- Once the Import Complete notification appears, click OK to view your imported references.
