CBU'S REFWORKS SUBSCRIPTION IS ENDING

CBU's subscription to RefWorks will end June 30, 2024.

  • If you have references that you wish to save, you will need to transfer them to another citation manager by June 30th.
  • FREE citation managers include Zotero and Mendeley.  Zotero is the citation manager that Plough Library will be using.

Using PubMed with Refworks

While many databases have direct exports to RefWorks built in, PubMed does not. Because of that, you need special instructions for extracting a reference list from PubMed into RefWorks.

Here's how:

PubMed

  • Conduct your search; select items for list.
  • Once you've made your selections, click the SAVE button at the top of the results list.
  • A Save Citations to File box will open.
  • Under Format, choose PubMed, and then click Create File.
    • PubMed citation files are tagged, saved as .txt files.

Your Computer

  • The file will download and you'll see it in the lower lefthand corner).
  • Right click on the download and select Show in Folder.
  • Copy the file to your desktop.

RefWorks

  • Click the +Add icon.
  • Choose Import References from the dropdown, then "select a file from your computer."
  • Find the file on your desktop and click open, or drag-n-drop the file.
  • RefWorks will recognize the file as an NLM PubMed file.
  • Import Options will appear.
    • At this point you can direct the imports to a specific folder, or simply click Import. You can always assign folders later.
  • Once the Import Complete notification appears, click OK to view your imported references.

Using PubMed with EBSCO databases like Medline and CINAHL

EBSCO databases have direct exports to RefWorks, and other citation management software products.

EBSCO database

  • Conduct your search.
  • Click the folder icon to the right of the citation to add references to a folder. Titles in the folder can be seen at the top of the results page to the far right.
  • Once you've made your selections (EBSCO allows you to put up to 50 items in a folder at a time), scroll back to the top of the results page, and click Go To Folder View.
  • From inside the Folder View, click Export.
  • CBU has set the Direct Export to RefWorks as the default for its EBSCO subscriptions.
  • Click Save.

RefWorks

  • Refworks will give you the option of choosing legacy RefWorks or the newest version of RefWorks. You should choose the newest version.
  • Import Options will appear.
    • At this point you can direct the imports to a specific folder, or simply click Import. You can always assign folders later.
  • Once the Import Complete notification appears, click OK to view your imported references.
